Since 2015, more than three thousand travelers have chosen A Barraka as their base camp to visit Flores… And they loved it!

Because we make a point of keeping it cozy, clean and comfortable. Our homemade furniture is practical and made out of local wood. Our common spaces are simple and well-organized to make the co-living easy and inspiring. And we never stop maintaining and improving the accommodation (2024: new hot water system with solar panels; 2025: new bathrooms, new doors and locks, general paint job, new wood stove, curtains and couch covers; 2026: new mattresses, new kitchen… )

A Barraka is a 4 bedrooms guesthouse, located in the small village of Fazenda, next to Lajes. The common areas include a large living room/dining room, a fully equipped kitchen, 2 bathrooms to be shared with the other guests. Private parking lot in front of the house and a garden from which you can enjoy the sea view.

Just downhill from the house, there is a café/restaurant and the bus stop. A grocery shop is a 10 minutes walking distance, as well as beautiful trails in the woods.

What will you find at A Barraka?

  • Your cozy bedroom (mattresses are 160 cm wide in the violet and orange room, 140 in the others)
  • Bedding and towels
  • Your color-coded boxes, one in the fridge and one above the kitchen cupboard, to keep your own food

In case you would rather prefer the intimacy of a whole house just for you, please have a look at our CASA do MAR, with amazing sea views (up to 4 guests)

About us:

We are Metello and Marina, an international couple who moved from Barcelona to Flores several years ago, in sarch of a peaceful spot to rise our kids and to grow organic food. We live 5 minutes walk from A Barraka, so we are always available in case you need anything.

We speak Spanish, Italian, French, English, and Portuguese, so you can communicate with us in whatever language you prefer…

When is the best season to visit Flores?

it mainly depends on your budget and time availability…

HIGH SEASON (June to September)

  • need to book many months in advance
  • room pricing can double in high season
  • car rentals can be crazily expensive
  • weather is generally nice
  • all restaurants are open
  • many openair events and traditional local festivals

LOWER SEASON (October to April/May)

  • no need to book with a lot of advance
  • accommodations are half the price
  • car rental can be 3 times cheaper
  • weather is often unfair
  • some good restaurants are closed
  • about 10% of scheduled flights are canceled due to weather conditions: keep this in mind for your return!

How long shall we stay?

We believe that visiting Flores and Corvo deserves at least 4 or 5 days… It would be a shame to travel all the way to the center of the North Atlantic and leave without having seen the beauty of all our amazing trails and landscapes!

Where is A Barraka located?

Rua Eirinha Velha N°9, 9960-220 Fazenda, Ilha das Flores, Portugal

Our guests opinion counts!

Last but not least: our values… we stand for peace, and we stand for nature!

That should be common sense, but unfortunately in this crazy world it is necessary to reiterate it: there is no such a thing as a just or humanitarian war. Wars and genocides are always bad, even for alleged self defense. We take peace seriously, so gun merchants and lords of war of any kind are not welcome at A Barraka.

We are also very worried about the ongoing anthropogenic destruction of ecosystems all over the planet. In line with the warnings of the scientific community, we believe that the only human priority, at this point, should be the recovery of the biosphere, even if it goes against our short term economic profit. That’s why, every year, we allocate parts of our revenues to conservationist organizations like Rainforest Rescue, or the Captain Paul Watson Foundation (€ 1,600 in 2025).
